Ingredients

  • Blackberries: Fresh or frozen, for a rich berry flavor and vibrant color.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness and balances the tartness of the lemons.
  • Water: Used to make the blackberry syrup and dilute the lemonade to the perfect consistency.
  • Fresh lemons: You can use lemonade concentrate as well!

Recipe Tips

Choose ripe blackberries: The sweeter and juicier the berries, the more flavorful your lemonade will be. If your berries are tart, you may need to adjust the sugar.

Strain well for a smooth drink: If you prefer a smoother lemonade, press the blackberries firmly when straining, but avoid forcing too much pulp through to keep it clear.

Chill before serving: Let the lemonade sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and get extra refreshing.

Enhance the flavor: Add a handful of fresh mint or basil while simmering the blackberries for a subtle herbal note.

Make it a fizzy drink: Replace some or all of the still water with sparkling water for a bubbly twist.

Use honey instead of sugar: Swap the sugar for ½ cup of honey and mix it into the warm blackberry syrup to dissolve.

Freeze it into popsicles: Pour the lemonade into popsicle molds for a refreshing summer treat.

Make it a cocktail: Add a splash of vodka, gin, or rum for a grown-up version of this fruity lemonade

Instructions

  1. Make the blackberry syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the blackberries, sugar, and 1 cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the berries break down, about 5 minutes. Mash the berries with a fork or the back of a spoon to release their juices. Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing out as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids and let the syrup cool slightly.
  2. Juice the lemons: While the syrup cools, roll the lemons on the counter to loosen the juices. Cut them in half and squeeze out the juice, straining out any seeds and pulp.
  3. Mix the lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice, the blackberry syrup, and the remaining 3 cups of cold water. Stir well to combine.
  4. Serve: Fill glasses with ice and pour in the lemonade. Garnish with fresh blackberries and lemon slices, if desired. Enjoy!
