This easy pumpkin centerpiece is such an easy DIY project for your fall tablescape. Dress up your fall table setting for Thanksgiving dinner or to just enjoy the fresh flowers of fall on your dining room table.
Last year (or maybe the year before) I made this faux fall pumpkin centerpiece, and while I like it, the faux pumpkin and flowers just didn’t fit with our home in the fall season. I had this great idea to use a real white pumpkin from the grocery store along with fresh flowers from a floral arrangement.
What Type of Pumpkins are Good For a Fall Table Setting
While most pumpkins are generally good for a table setting, you want to make sure your pumpkin isn’t too big or too small for the proportion of your table. You have so many different sizes to choose from for your own pumpkin centerpiece.
For most harvest tables a medium to small pumpkin works best. Plus, the smaller the pumpkin the less floral stems you will need! Some beautiful real pumpkins I suggest are:
- White pumpkins
- Green pumpkins
- Cinderella pumpkins
- Orange pumpkins (for a traditional orange look)
There are so many pretty pumpkins to choose from, it all depends on the look you are going for!
What You Need for This Floral Centerpiece
- Real pumpkin – from your garden center, farm, or grocery store
- Sharp knife – sharp and sturdy enough to cut through the skin of your pumpkin
- Short vase – to fit inside the pumpkin
- Floral scissors – for cutting the stems of your flowers
- Fresh flower stems – 1 bouquet (the size of your pumpkin will determine how many bouquet you will need)
- Bleach – to prevent molding
How Do You Make a Pumpkin Centerpiece?
- Wash your pumpkin: Start by washing your pumpkin thoroughly. You want to give it a good scrub with warm soapy water to remove any dirt, spores and foliage.
- Dry the pumpkin: You will want to dry the pumpkin after washing for easy handling and to prevent early spoilage.
- Cut the top of the pumpkin: With a sharpe knife cut a circle on the top of your pumpkin circling around the center of the pumpkin. Just as you would a jack-o-lantern.
- Pull out the pumpkin guts and seeds: Remove as much as the inside as the pumpkin as possible. Remember to save your pumpkin seeds for planting the next year!
- Spray the inside of the pumpkin: You will want to spray a generous amount of diluted bleach on the inside and top of your pumpkin. This will help extend the life of your pumpkin and prevent premature rotting.
- Place the vase inside the pumpkin: Once you have sprayed your pumpkin, place a vase of water inside the pumpkin, you want to choose a vase that doesn’t stick out too far out of the top of the pumpkin.
- Arrange the flowers: This is the fun part! Now, arrange your flowers inside your pumpkin table centerpiece. Cut the stems of your flowers short enough so they just stick out from the top of the pumpkin to create fullness. Keep placing until you are happy!
- Enjoy your beautiful centerpiece: Place your pumpkin centerpiece in the center of the table. A perfect dining table addition for your thanksgiving table or for a fall dinner party!
